Re: Treatment to Capacitor Accidents of Hitachi “Dual Voltage-type” Dryer “HD-N1260DU”
It has been found that some of the products of the Hitachi “Dual Voltage-type” Minus Ion Dryer, “HD-N1260DU” sold from November 2004 to September 2006, may emit smoke or ignite due to the capacitor’s voltage breakdown. Although occurrences are expected to be very rare, we will take the measures with official announcements for the Japanese market to prevent accidents (Please refer to the attached: Company Announcement, Press Release and Homepage, schedule to be released on October 24, 2006).
Although the products has not been exported from Japan. They may be used overseas since they are the Dual Voltage type. If you receive inquiries from customers, please treat them as follows:
- Phenomenon
Smoke or fire comes out of the handle, when the power plug is inserted to the power outlet, regardless of the power switch being turned on or off. - Cause
Noise suppression capacitors with inadequate voltage rating in the power circuit were used in some units at production. There is a slight possibility that high surge voltage from a power line may cause the capacitor’s voltage breakdown (short circuit) emitting smoke and igniting. - Subject Type and Number of Units

- mprovements
The following improvements have been made from October 4, 2006.- We changed noise suppression capacitor to higher voltage rating capacitors.
- The position of noise suppression capacitor has been changed from the primary terminal to the secondary terminal of the power switch.
- A protection fuse was added in the capacitor circuit to improve safety of the noise suppression capacitor.
- Material of handle cover was changed to flame resistant resin (94V-0).

- To the customers
6-(1) Basic: Replacement with an improved product should be carried out as follows:
1. Ask customers to contact (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell) directly.
2. Ask customers to send the products to (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell). Kyushu Hitachi Maxell will inform the customers of the sending method. (by DHL, by all charge prepaid)
3. (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell) will send replacements to customers directly.
6-(2) Request to Distributors
1. If customers have made inquiries to HSCs, please introduce (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell).
2. If the customer is not satisfied with being introduced to (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell) or if the customer directly brings the product to HSC, or if the customer uses languages other than English, HSC person in charge should contact (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell).
(Kyushu Hitachi Maxell) will then send a replacement product to HSC and then HSC will collect the product of the customer and send the replacement product to the customer.
Please send the collected product to (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell).
3. In sending the product to (Kyushu Hitachi Maxell), please use DHL by all charge collect.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to users, but we ask that all users disconnect the product’s plug from any outlet and suspend use of this product. We will replace this product free of charge.

Re: Defects of Hitachi “Voltage Change-type” Minus Ion Dryer
Kyushu Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. (President & Director: Masahiko Ochiai) plans to take the following measures as it was found that some of the products of the “Voltage Change-type” Minus Ion Dryer, manufactured and sold from November 2004 to September 2006, had defects.
For some of the products, it was found that they may emit smoke and ignite due to defects in the electronics parts, although this is very rare.
Therefore, in terms of prevention of accidents, we will replace the subject products free of charge. In major national newspapers, dated October 24, we will also ask that users unplug product power cords from outlets and cease use of the products. We will also make an announcement on the Company’s homepage.

Noise prevention condensers in the power circuit of the products with inadequate voltage resistance were incorporated in some products and if they are subjected to a high surge voltage from a power line, the condensers could potentially be destroyed (short-circuited) emitting smoke and igniting.

We will make an announcement in major national newspapers, dated October 24 and also publish a notice of the products on the Company’s homepage and we will respond to inquiries from customers through a toll-free service.
